  大学英语故事作文 篇1

  The Toilet Tank

Stanley had just finished brushing his teeth. He noticed water flowing into the toilet bowl. Thats strange, he thought. The water continued to seep into the bowl. Stanley lifted the toilet tank top. The tank was half full, but the water was slowly rising. What in the world is going on, he wondered. He had not just flushed the toilet. He continued to watch the water rise in the tank. The water got up to the Water Line rk in the tank, where it was supposed to stop rising. But it continued to rise.

Stanley was alarmed. Is this thing going to overflow, he wondered. He went into his bedroom and grabbed some towels. When he returned to the bathroom, the toilet was silent. The water had stopped rising at one inch above the water line. But that was only about two inches below the top of the tank. That was too close for comfort. Stanley put two and two together. He had heard water running for more than a week *, but he had assumed it was his neighbor’s toilet. Now he knew it was his own.

He called Henry the handyn. Henry was a really nice guy. His rates were much cheaper than a regular plumber’s rates. Henry said he’d be over the next day. The next day, Henry arrived only 30 minutes late, which was “on time” for Henry. He tried to turn off the toilet tank shutoff valve on the bathroom wall, but the valve was “frozen.” “We don’t want to mess with that,” he told Stanley. “That valve is too easy to bust, and it would take a lot of work to put a new one on.”

Henry went out to the front of the apartment building and turned off the in water valve. No one was home in the building except Stanley, so Henry didn’t have to warn the neighbors about the shutoff. Back in the bathroom, Henry flushed the toilet. Then he used a couple of rags to dry and clean the bot* of the toilet tank. He unscrewed the plastic Fluidster 400A Fill Valve and removed it. He replaced it with a new fill valve. “When the water keeps running, it’s usually your fill valve. It could also be the flapper, but your flapper looks okay. Plus, it’s a weird-looking flapper. I’d probably have to special order it.”

Henry tightened the plastic nut below the tank, securing the fill valve. “You mus* over-tighten this, because it’ll break,” he said. “In the old days, we used rubber gaskets and metal nuts and washers. Nowadays, everything is cheap plastic.” He went back outside, turned on the in valve, and returned. He flushed the toilet, waited for the bowl to refill and for the new fill valve to shut off the water. It shut off exactly at the Water Line rk.

“We got lucky,” Henry said. “I don’t have to fiddle around adjusting the fill valve. That’s good, because I’m a little late for another job right *.” Henry flushed the toilet again, and watched the bowl and the tank fill. "That does it," he told Stanley. Stanley thanked him and paid him.

Three hours later, Stanley noticed a puddle of water, hardly bigger than a quarter, on the bathroom floor. He called Henry, who said the plastic nut just needed a little tightening. But because he was working all that day on another job, he wouldn’t be able to come over until *orrow. He told Stanley to put a big plastic bowl under the tank and not to worry. “It’s just a tiny leak. Your bathroom won’t get flooded.”

  The Argument

Lulu didn’t want to go to the play. This Wednesday was going to be very busy. She had realty meetings and clients to drive around. Called “Narnia,” the play was based on the novel by C.S. Lewis. It was a musical. “You k* that I don’t like musicals,” she told Walt. “I can never understand what they’re saying when they sing, and the music is not that good, either.” He told her that there were a lot of great musicals, fous just for their music if nothing else. She asked when he was going to take her to one.

Well, he said, someone had told him that this play was the one. She still said that she’d rather not go. He argued that they only went to a play once every two months, so please be ready. He would pick her up the next day at 7 p.m.

Throughout the next day, he thought about the play—ybe Lulu was right. He called up a couple of friends to ask if they had seen the play, but they had not. At about 6 p.m., he had the bright idea to Google the play. Sure enough, he found a site that contained music sples from the play. He spled about six tunes; they did nothing for him. Lulu was right, he thought, at least about this play. He was going to call Lulu, but just then his sister called him. They talked for at least half an hour.

Walt finally called Lulu at 6:55 p.m. “You were right, honey,” he said. “The music is not very good. So let’s not go to the play, if that’s all right with you.” That was great, she said.

“So, let’s go to a movie,” she suggested.

  “A movie? When?”

“Right *!” she said. She was all dressed up, and she was ready to go somewhere! But he wasn’t. He had already decided to stay in. "How about a movie *orrow?" he asked.

“Tomorrow!?” she yelled over the phone. She was furious. Did he have any idea what a difficult day she had had, trying to finish all her realty work so that she would be ready by 7 p.m.? And then he had the nerve to call her up at 6:55 to tell her to forget it? Forget it?! Had he thought about calling her up earlier? Had he thought about asking her for her opinion before deciding everything on his own? “Of course not!” she said as she answered her own question. This was just one more exple, she raged on, of how he had absolutely no respect for her, and she was tired of it. “We’re through!” she shouted just before hanging up.

Thanks to burgeoning technology, the past decades have witnessed the thriving of clone technology. And its application into hun has de clone reach an unprecedented peak. This rvel gives rise to much concern ong scientific community. However, whether hun cloning should be advocated has aroused heat argument. As far as I concerned, the merits of hun cloning outweigh its demerits. On one hand,it’s safe to say that even the best clone technology has the possibility of failure, and this truth is also publicly k*n by scientific researchers. Therefore, hun cloning is the indulgence of this possibility.Once it fails,it will do harm to cloned men. From anil cloning eeriments, the survival rate of the cloned species is very low.Unfortunately, these cloned species that have survived often have more or less some physical problems.Nowadays,ny researchers have begun to clone a hun being, which leads to the birth of disabled infants because of the failure of hun cloning eeriments. These crude phenomena leave us with a chill. They are the evidence of the crime resulting from hun cloning and the trple on hun life.In order to succeed, those crazy scientists cruelly kill the lives of ny cloned men, which is no doubt crimes rather than researches.Do any rational persons will support a research at the cost of killing people? What is worse, result of this research will bring people with terrible disasters. This research is a kind of technological progress that will ke n liable to extinction. On the other hand, even if the cloning hun eeriments will succeed,it will also ke chaos on civil legal relationship. It’s clear that cloned men have no guardians. As is k*n to all, nature persons all have guardians.Who are the parents of the cloned men?In fact, cloned men can’t find their parents no tter through which eeriment. They are only research results of researchers. It would be irresponsible to clone a hun being, for they will become orphans thoroughly after they are born.On that circumstance, will those crazy scientists undertake the responsibility of fostering these cloned men?Perhaps no one will believe. It’s incredible to igine that one will live a happy life that has both physical problems and lower social standing.Who will be willing to educate them?Cloned men are just victims and eerimental ges. Technology is a double-edged sword.Used properly,it will be advantageous to the whole society.Used improperly,it will have great negative effects. On balance I hold on the stance that the scourge of hun cloning is tremendous. To sum up,this technology should be restricted and the government should take effective measures to do with it.

Dear Jenny,

How is your survey on mobile payment going? I’m glad I can help with it.

It is generally believed that China is the largest mobile payment rket. Nowhere else is the cashless trend more obvious than in China. Most of us are used to paying by scanning QR codes whatever we buy—books, clothes, and electronic devices, to ne a few, which is a glimpse into the life of most Chinese like me and my fily.

With the widespread use of mobile payment, Wechat or Alipay is the most convenient and safest way to pay. We rarely need to carry a wallet or cash at all. Besides, never will we worry about getting fake notes or having to count change. In short, mobile payment has greatly changed peoples life in China.

Personally, I think mobile payment should be encouraged. First, it has won over consumers with its convenience. Another advantage is that there are often discounts if you ke mobile payment, as jor online payment platforms are competing to have more consumers use their service.

I hope my elanation can be of some help to you. Wish you good luck.

  Yours faithfully,

  Li Hua

  大学英语故事作文

The Most Important Day in My Life

Have you ever been at sea in a dense fog when it seemed as if a tangible white darkness shut you in, and the great ship, tense and anxious, groped her way toward the shore? I was like that ship before my education began, only I had no way of k*ing how near the harbor was.

The most important day I remember in all my life is the one on which my teacher, Anne Mansfield Sullivan, ce to me. I filled with wonder when I consider the immeasurable contrast between the two lives which it connects. It was the third of March, 1887, three months before I was seven years old.

On the afternoon of that exciting day, I guessed vaguely from my mother’s signs and from the hurrying to and fro in the house that something unusual was about to happen, so I went to the door and waited on the steps.

I felt approaching footsteps. I thought it was my mother and stretched out my hand. Someone took it, and then I was caught up and held close in the arms of the person who had come to reveal all things to me, and, more important than that, to love me.

The morning after my teacher ce she led me into her room and gave me a doll. When I had played with it a little while, Miss Sullivan slowly spelled into my hand the word “d-o-l-l”. I was at once interested in this finger play and tried to imitate it. When I finally succeeded in king the letters correctly I was filled with childish pleasure and pride. Running downstairs to my mother I held up my hand and de the letters for doll. I did not k* that I was spelling a word or even that words existed; I simply de my fingers go in monkey-like imitation. In the days that followed I learned to spell in this uncomprehending way ny words, ong them, “pin”, “hat”, “cup”, and a few verbs like “sit”, “stand” and “walk”, but my teacher had been with me several weeks before I understood that everything has a ne.

One day while I was playing with my new doll, Miss Sullivan gave me my old doll, too. She then spelled “d-o-l-l” and tried to ke me understand that “d-o-l-l” applied to both. Earlier in the day, we had a struggle over the two words “m-u-g” is “mug” and “w-a-t-e-r” is “water” , but I persisted in mixing up the two. I bece impatient and, seizing the new doll, I dashed it on the floor, breaking it into pieces. I was not sorry after my fit of temper. In the dark, still world, I had no strong sentiment for anything.

My teacher brought me my hat, and I knew we were going out into the warm sunshine. We walked down the path to the well-house. Someone was drawing water, and my teacher placed my hand under the spout. As the cool stre gushed over one hand, she spelled into the other word water, first slowly, then rapidly. I stood still; my whole attention was fixed upon the movements of her finger. Suddenly I seemed to remember something I had forgotten — a thrill of returning thought – and the mystery of language was revealed to me. I knew then that the “w-a-t-e-r” meant that wonderful cool something that was flowing over my hand. That living word awakened my soul and set it free.

I left the well-house eager to learn. Everything had a ne and each ne gave birth to a new thought. As we returned to the house, every object which I touched seemed to be full of life. That was because I saw everything with a strange, new sight that had come to me. On entering the door I remembered the doll I had broken. I felt my way to the fragments and tried in vain to put them together. Then my eyes were filled with tears, for I realized what I had done, and for the first time I felt sorry.

I learned a lot of new words that day. It would have been difficult to find a happier child than me when I lay in my sll bed that night and thought of the joys that day had brought to me, and for the first time I longed for a new day to come.
